Can't connect to wireless

Hi there, need some help.

I installed Ubuntu 9.10 on an old laptop and the wireless connection worked fine. Nevertheless the computes was slow when browsing in the internet and opening programs therefore i changed it to U-lite 8.1 alpha 2 by typing the: wget command.
When rebooting was finished i wasn't able to connect to the wireless network. Honestly, i didn't understand the Network tools window and installed a Network utility where i typed the ESSID of the wireless network and the WEP key. Nothing happened so i tried to search for wireless connections typing wlist wlan0 scan and two differrent networks appear. I don't know what to do next.

Thanks.

Benito

Did you lose nm-applet in the sys tray?

They should appear there. Just select one.
