U-lite 0.9 Progress UpdateI believe I have finished off the initial packaging of LXDE 0.4.1 and have sorted out the bugs I could. The next steps will be the creating of the U-lite metapackage and customizing the packages with U-lite artwork and such. I would encourage some of you who are more experienced with Linux to try testing out the packages in the repository. Please contact me to coordinate that effort, but most normal users should still not use U-lite 0.9 at this point. |

Metapackages
I'm understanding that the installation will be basen on a .deb metapackage and its integrated scripts. Am I right?
If so, then could be an alternative metapackage called as "ulite-minimal", with kazehakase instead of m.firefox, without Pidgin, without Gnumeric, and other differences to save disk space and give a minimal/basic functionality. Then everyone can add own preferred applications (as GIMP, media player, ...).
I plan on using a similar
I plan on using a similar idea, but you will eventually be able to install whatever browser you want, among other things by using or on the depends. U-lite will still default to Firefox though. Furthermore, several programs are removable because they are recommended rather than depend. This utilizes apt-get and aptitudes defaults to install recommended packages.

I'm can not wait when be ready :)
New u-lite will be running slower, faster or like 0.8? What you think?
I think that U-lite 0.9 will
I think that U-lite 0.9 will provide a faster experience in some aspects and a slower one in others. One "slow-down" of sorts will be the change from kaz to firefox. But if you install kaz, you would be back to a similarly fast experience. I hope to offer more customization options without removing the metapackage to let people change out some components that some people may not like.
One of the biggest changes will be the default theme. I am going for a more modern look for U-lite 0.9 and I am excited about the new theme, I hope everyone else will like it. I am working on putting together this theme as we speak.
Opera does much better on
Opera does much better on older machines.
I had a P3 to test with. Opera loads the page 2 times as fast and scrolls well.
Also to note truth is for older hardware support its kind of oddly placed. Old Nvidia cards, which you see quite often in old hardware still around only has good easy working drivers with Hardy. Intel drivers once again only work well with hardy due to current regressions. Fortunately ATI is in fair shape, but not as fast as of yet.
Pretty much actual usage wise with around 5-9 year old hardware Hardy does the best job supporting it.
Then you have getdeb.net where you can keep upto date with important apps like GIMP + Pidgin + Many others.
