The Yocto Project describes itself as “an open source collaboration project that helps developers create custom Linux-based systems regardless of the hardware architecture.” It is explicit that it is not an embedded Linux distribution: it creates a custom one for you.
Its own site lists automotive (Automotive Grade Linux), set-top boxes, TVs, commercial switches, routers, security products, embedded and medical devices among the uses.
Compared with Buildroot, Yocto is aimed at products that need long-term maintenance and reusable, layered configuration, at the price of a steeper learning curve and heavier builds.
